i have a computer with vga nvidia geforce mx200.. kind of an old device. and i cant find the driver for linux. later on i found out why the lilo cannot install into the mbr. that’s becoz the lilo.conf stated about the vesa in the lilo command line to display some boot logo. meanwhile the vga doesnt support the vesa driver yet. so it failed install to the mbr.
then i look into the lilo.conf… and it written like this in his first line
# LILO configuration file
# generated by ‘liloconfig’
# Start LILO global section
# Append any additional kernel parameters:
boot = /dev/hda
# Boot BMP Image.
# Bitmap in BMP format: 640x480x8
bitmap = /boot/slack.bmp
# Menu colors (foreground, background, shadow, highlighted
# foreground, highlighted background, highlighted shadow):
bmp-colors = 255,0,255,0,255,0
# Location of the option table: location x, location y, number of
# columns, lines per column (max 15), “spill” (this is how many
# entries must be in the first column before the next begins to
# be used. We don’t specify it here, as there’s just one column.
bmp-table = 60,6,1,16
# Timer location x, timer location y, foreground color,
# background color, shadow color.
bmp-timer = 65,27,0,255
u see the lilo wants the boot loads the logo with bmp bitmap… and down after that the lilo choose the vesa driver to use. and it failed coz the oldies vga.
so i mark with # all the bitmap and vesa driver and only left this command
# Standard menu.
# Or, you can comment out the bitmap menu above and
# use a boot message with the standard menu:
message = /boot/boot_message.txt
but dont change anything below that line specially about the linux image statement.
then instal lilo to mbr
$ lilo -C /etc/lilo.conf
$ lilo -M /dev/hda
then u should see the lilo install succesfully. and try to restart.
